The Effect of Outcomes-Based Education on Children’s Mental Health

Outcome-based education is an educational model that removes the focus on what school provides to their students while making students understand “what they know and are able to do” whatever the outcomes will be.

Outcome-based education or OBE is a student centered educational method that is required to measure student ability at every step. The aim of OBE is to maximize the student learning pattern by enhancing their knowledge and skills.

The outcome-based education is also called a standard-based education system. OBE is proven in the success of an institution by means of measuring institute learning outcomes and enabling students to develop new doors at the same time that prepare students to stay up with global counterparts.

These are factors that can raise up the educational standard and help the institute to achieve accreditation from esteemed accreditation boards such as the National Board of Accreditation (NBA).

In contrast, talking about the traditional education model highly depends on theoretical aspects of learning concepts. It repeats the teaching-learning process in a plodding way that only focuses on memorizing skills rather than skills development in students. Hardly it provides the chance for students to develop new skills that might be useful for their career development.

However, traditional education is good for Student mental health as compared to outcome-based education. Poor mental health in students leads to many deficiencies in students in terms of learning. Let’s learn the effect of OBE.

OBE causes mental illness in students which affects their life and studies

Mental illness and education

Mental health disorder affects the person’s well-being which brings dutifully for the students to deal with daily life outside the school. Having a mental illness in school can add challenges to the students in terms of academic achievements.

Sometimes, we all have gone through the same situation of feeling tired or anxious, or having difficulty in concentrating. However, students with serious mental issues can have it on a daily basis which sometimes overwhelms the experience.

Concentration and stamina

Consider a student sitting next to the window and starting glaring at the tree outside the window as every student does and suddenly he or she stops paying attention to the class. Unfortunately, students with mental illness are prone to extraneous sight, sitting, or smell which eventually distract them and make it difficult to understand the lecture. This means they tend to miss important points and are unable to discover their potential in the topic which can negatively affect their outcomes in education and leads them to do poorly.

The other types of students with a mental disorder don’t need to be distracted by smell, sound, or sight to break their attention. However, they have an inability regarding concentration period which means a short attention span. Additionally, taking long tests becomes difficult for such students to complete the test due to the cause of distraction. Somehow their grades suffer.

Students with mental health disorders have difficulty in finishing their long test may seem not a problem but simply feel like having no energy to finish it. The medicine they take causes drowsiness in them. As a result, this gives a great negative impact on the ability to memorize materials, and follow directions, fortunately they buy assignment online to complete their academic tasks.

Social interactions and pressure

Critical mental health disorder makes difficulties for those students to interact with the fellow mates and teachers. As a result, they miss out their potential values among the students, asking questions to the assignment experts, miss out notes from the other students, studying in a group or even making new friends to enhance their well being. Not having friends or having good relations with other students decreases the chances of succeeding in the class.

Mental health and school attendance

Childrens having mental illness causes them to skip their school and gives the reason for physical illness. The anxiety and stress caused by social pressures, workload, and peer groups is always overwhelming for any person, let alone the school children.

Although, the stigma still exists in this world, around the children with mental disorder problems that lead to bullying those children who have identified and acknowledged their mental health situation.

If a child doesn’t feel well enough then they are unable to attain the education in an outcome based method and interprets it efficiently according to their ability.

How can the school help in reducing mental illness?

How does OBE impose an extra burden on teacher and student

1.Identify the signs of mental illness struggle

Teachers spend extensive amount of time with the children in the school during the week, at that time they should lookout for the signs of mental illness in the students such as:

  1. Absence of confidence.
  2. Tiredness.
  3. Gaining weight quickly.
  4. Difficulty in concentrating.
  5. Complaints about pains like stomach ache or headaches.
  6. Suddenly reduces socialising.
  7. Lack of interest in studying materials.
  8. Frequent absences.

2. Eliminates mental disorder stigma

Schools need to reduce stigma in order to motivate children to come forward in the class. When they are facing challenges in their daily life or interpreting the OBE. Additionally, the school needs to completely eliminate the bullying in school that occurs around the mental disorder childrens (Young, 2020).

3. Training teachers

As teachers are the first who identify the mental disorder signs in the childrens. The Dean of the school should make sure to train the teachers regarding identifying basic mental health issues in students and provide them appropriate support (Cheprasov, 2019).

Sum up

In a nutshell, outcome based education transforms the traditional learning experience which is embraced by educational institutes for improving the skills and knowledge. However, every aspect has drawbacks so the OBE has. OBE is a critical learning experience that possesses the power of thinking in the students which causes stress and anxiety in them.

Furthermore, the stress and anxiety in the students decreases the chances of learning the materials in the class that eventually forms into mental illness. However, the teachers are the great source of eliminating the signs of mental illness in students if the school administratives make sure they are trained regarding identifying mental illness in the students.
